Maths
In Maths this term, we are learning
about Number Properties and Addition and Subtraction.
What
can you do to help your child?
Please encourage your child to learn
their basic facts! Their homework has been planned to help them have these
facts at their fingertips.
Practice doubling and halving numbers... Doubling and halving will help
children with sharing (division) later in the year.
Ask your child 'quick fire questions' such as:
Pairs of numbers that make 10 or 20... "7+something equals 10?"
"Tell me 2 numbers that equal 20."
Ten more/ten less than any number... "What is 10 more than 27?"
"Tell me the number 10 less than 165."
There are lots of online maths games to help your child learn, see the
Mathslinks for some we like! We use some of these in class, ask your
child to show you how they work (and kids, maybe you can have a competition
with your mums and dads, see if you can beat them!)
You can help your child by practising their number facts with them. Ask your
child to answer in 3 seconds or less! Here are some examples:

Work with your child to find the bit of the pipe that will join to the existing
pipe to make 10. You could help prompt by asking questions such as:
- 1 and how many more makes
10?
- 5 and how many more makes 10?
Help your child to count the squares to
work out the length of pipe if they need to. Encourage them to remember the
facts as they become more familiar with the numbers.
- Can you remember which
number joins with 2 to make 10?
