Our school and our future
Point Chevalier School is full of engaged, positive, and inspired students, teachers and staff. Respectful relationships exist at all levels. We have a strong sense of wellbeing (hauora). We are all reflective, self-regulated learners. We keep the learner at the centre of everything we do.
Teachers facilitate an environment where no one is afraid to take risks. Students know what and how they are learning, why, and how to be successful. Students take responsibility and ownership of this. They are prepared and have the skills for the next stage of their learning. They have an open mind towards new challenges that come their way.

Our students demonstrate a humble confidence. Resilience is actively taught and allowed to build. Everybody has a chance to speak and is listened to; student voice is cultivated and encouraged. Teachers adapt their practice to meet needs of individual students with a flexible curriculum that bends to the child. Our students have time to follow their own interests and develop their own passions. Teachers are role models for risk-taking. Our teachers show compassion, empathy, and an understanding of a child’s struggle, demonstrating a willingness to support them through it. Above all else our teachers are creative, innovative, inspiring, adaptable and flexible.
Our school provides diverse opportunities and promotes an inclusive, integrated curriculum. We provide specialist programmes and ensure a balanced curriculum.
Our students know how to think and solve problems. We value lateral and critical thinking that generate alternative, outside-the-box ideas. We have confident and articulate individuals who have a strong sense of drive and identity. Students and teachers are free to positively challenge the status quo in order to promote progress and create their own future.
The Point Chevalier School community has a collective responsibility for student achievement. We have a strong home, school and community partnership with clear, positive, and open communication. Our parents and caregivers have trust in our school’s approach to learning and education. We actively build sustainable links with our Māori and Pasifika families.
Our students leave us as creative, forward thinking, empathetic, resilient individuals. They are able to analyse information, opinions and ideas with confidence and humility. They lead us into the future.
Rangi-mata-rau is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
We recognise the treaty by incorporating it into all aspects of our school including governance, structure and practices. In an education context:
Article 1 gives the government the right to organise and administer an education system
Article 2 guarantees to the chiefs, the subtribes and all the people of New Zealand the unqualified exercise of their chieftainship over education
Article 3 guarantees to Māori the same rights and duties as the descendants of English people have in respect of education
Article 4 protects Māori culture
We take steps to ensure our governance includes Māori to ensure a strong Māori voice in our consultation, strategy, planning and delivery.
We incorporate tikanga Māori into our curriculum and practices.
Pt Chevalier School values diversity
Rangi-mata-rau is committed to inclusion across race, gender, age, religion, identity, needs and abilities, and actively promotes a welcoming and safe environment for all our students, teachers and staff to belong and flourish.
All cultures within our school are valued, accepted and celebrated through promotion of an inclusive school culture. Teachers ensure that students from all cultures are treated with respect and dignity, and will expect and work to achieve high standards of achievement regardless of cultural background.
Te Kāhui Ako o Waitematā

Pt Chevalier School is a supportive and active member of our community of learning. The Waitematā Kāhui Ako brings together 12 kura located in close proximity to our harbour, whose name is derived from Te Matā, the Flint Stone, a pinnacle rock referred to on maps as Boat Rock and visible at low tide off Kauri Point.
With reliable charts and sustainable provisions as cooperative components, we give life to the words of our Kāhui Ako visionary, the late Ken Havill.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could create a community where it is impossible to fail?
– Ken Havill
